Tonight my program (Fashion Management & Promotion at Humber College, Toronto) threw a networking event in our fashion building. All students who graduated from a fashion program at Humber over the past 10 years were invited, and current students were given the opportunity to connect with them. It was a super fun night, and everyone got to take home a goodie bag filled with free swag from Humber and sponsors in Toronto. Ever since the very first Harry Potter film came out, I have been a huge fan of Emma Watson. Of course I was, given that she was playing the role of one of the greatest heroines of all time - Hermione Granger. As the years have passed, I have continued to admire her ability to stay classy in Hollywood, maintaining that quality good girl image that so many celebs seem to have trouble in keeping. Emma's style has definitely evolved in the last year, maintaining the look of a classy, glamorous young starlet - is she perhaps channeling her inner Audrey?
Emma never ceases to amaze me. Here is a photo of her taken last week at the premiere of her new film, Noah. She wowed her fans wearing a stunning black satin gown by Oscar de la Renta. Today in my fashion marketing class, we had to create a media kit as an in-class assignment. Media kits are often used by bloggers as a means of marketing themselves to prospective companies/brands with whom they wish to do business with. They are meant to visually convey a blogger's brand and image, while informing the prospective partner of useful facts that could serve to aid them in a partnership deal. Here's what I came up with. Comment below and let me know what you think! xx davina One of the classes that I am taking this term in my Fashion Management program is Entrepreneurship - and it is definitely one of my most favourite classes to date! Although the class isn't too structured around the subject of fashion, I find it so interesting because of all the different entrepreneurial ventures we get to discuss. As a Commerce graduate with a love for fashion and a desire to make it big with a fashion/design related business venture of my own one day, I find this class very practical and inspiring. Which brings me to today's lesson. Each week a select group of students are required to present an interesting entrepreneurial idea that they have researched (does not have to be fashion related). In today's class, someone presented their finding - the world's first interactive shoppable video - and it was by far one of the coolest and most revolutionizing entrepreneurial ideas I have seen to date. I can count on both hands the number of times I have seen a music video and envied/wondered what the people featured were wearing. Or have watched an interview/TV episode online and wondered what the characters were wearing (this happened most recently while watching the season finale of Girls - who is Marnie's green dress by?!). By integrating a handy tool like this into videos as they stream, consumers can view and purchase in real time what they like, and be just like their favourite celeb or TV character. From the viewpoint of a major brand or big box retailer, this idea is $$$HUGE$$$. Imagine the possibilities! Below, I have embedded the link directly from the SSENSE website so that you can see the actual interactive video for yourself. What do you think? PS. Have I ever mentioned how much I absolutely love SSENSE?? Readers beware - don't go on this website if you're severely fashion obsessed. It may make your wallets that much emptier (but ohhh so worth it!)
xo davina I have to be honest with you - Monday Mornings are usually not my favourite thing in the world.
However, this particular Monday really perked up for me when I logged onto my Pinterest account earlier today. During the course of this past weekend, where I returned home to Niagara to visit my family and friends (and was really quite busy wining & dining away), it appears that I had hit my 10,000 follower mark. Seriously. 10,000. Followers. On my Pinterest. And not only did I hit the 10,000 follower mark, I surpassed it by 337 more. In one weekend. The news really made me want to dance, shout and cry all at once. You see, it is actually thanks to Pinterest that I am where I am today. It was because of this super popular social media phenomenon that I discovered just how creative & fashion/design/pug oriented that I am. Silly as it sounds, Pinterest really taught me a lot about myself. And while my roommates in university would scoff at me during finals for all the time I spent pinning, when I could have been far more productive studying, I do not regret one minute of it. Sure, my grades could have been better, but I still earned my degree, and, more importantly, discovered the creative direction I wanted to take in life. When I look at my Pinterest account, I am continuously inspired by the things that I pin, whether they be the new 'It' bag I am currently coveting, or a super hardcore workout regiment that I am dying to master in time for bikini season. I use Pinterest to file all my favourite recipes, as well as plan for the day I say I do. Today in my Visual Merchandising class at Humber, we were required to bring in items from home to create a themed visual display. Although it is a fashion class, the theme itself did not have to be fashion related, however, given my loves for fashion & the colour Tiffany blue, I had a few items laying around my Toronto apartment that ignited my idea for a Tiffany themed visual display. However, today was by far the day that it was most missed by me.
Because the little town of Kingston, Ontario, is SUCH a quaint, stunning little university town, there are a few holidays/events that are very significant to me, mainly due to the amount of love and spirit that Queen's students allot to them each year. And St. Patty's Day happens to be one of them. Above is a picture taken on the notorious Aberdeen St. (where riots have occurred during past Queen's Homecoming), and is typically a place where many parties occur when necessary. It is not uncommon during these times to find police kindly writing drinking tickets and confiscating alcohol from severely intoxicated students, nor to spot someone funneling an enormously long pipe of beer from the rooftop of a student apartment down to the lawn. Sadly, because I am so preoccupied with a much more adult life these days in the city of Toronto, it has been extremely difficult to find a weekend to sneak up to Queen's and my fellow Kingstonites. Throughout the year it has been my goal to return to Queen's to relive, by far, the GREATEST celebration ever known to campus. But, given the stark combination of the ridiculously cold weather, work, school, and just overall life, I did not get the chance to sneak up this fine Monday :( ... maybe next year? Happy St. Patty's Day! xx Today was our first real snow day of the season! Sadly, it's in March :( And after this terribly long, bitterly cold winter, I am BEYOND ready to get my body bikini ready and sport some pretty new sundress purchases! Yesterday was bright, sunny, and a whopping +8 degrees, and today I awoke to a mound of snow on my car, -5 degree weather, and a tumultuous blizzard outside my door. Brrrrrr. Well, that's Canada for you! If only I could teletransport myself back three weeks ago to sunny Cayo Santa Maria in Cuba, where I vacationed over my Reading Week. Or - even better - would be to have our own blissful, balmy warm weather. Let's go Toronto! Today in my marketing/social media class, we had a fantastic guest speaker - Stephanie Sterjovski - Toronto fashion & lifestyle blogger and owner of SS Print Shop. She was so inspirational! Stephanie originally started out blogging because it was a means for her to express herself creatively. She loved fashion, she loved design, and she loved to write, so what better way to unleash some creative energy than to blog?
As someone who is very entrepreneurial and fashion oriented myself, it was inspiring for me to see how someone very similar could create a business and be successful, all starting from something as simple as blogging. No matter what social media platform you are using - Pinterest, Facebook, Instagram, INK361 - Stephanie remains consistent in her personal image and branding. In my current position as a student, it's a little hard to blog/post as often as Stephanie (or to have as nice things to blog/post about!), but after seeing what Stephanie has done, she has given me many new ideas! Here is a pic I found on her INK361 profile of some of her prints that she sells. She was even sweet enough to bring a bag full of prints for everyone in class!! I'm really in love with the TRAVEL, CHARM, LOVE, CREATE, SPARKLE print tho... may have to swing by Chapters and pick one up for myself ;) xx Today at work, I bought a new summer dress by Gypsy 05 (seen below) and it inspired me to create a new set on Polyvore. I am obsesssssed! This dress is made of 100% silk and is super lightweight, and is perfect for running errands on a warm summer day. I would definitely pair it with a large black tote, some gladiators and some large shades for the ultimate effortless look. |
